We acquire, describe and preserve these government records as archives, relating to almost every aspect of New Zealand life and the lives of individual New Zealanders, from the beginning of British Government in 1840 to the present day. Archives take many forms including manuscripts, photographs, films, maps, tapes, plans, video recordings, books, paintings, drawings, and prints. National Archives ensures that this documentary heritage is preserved for future generations and made accessible to both academic researchers and the general public.
