A three-step safety check

Step 1 counter

Inspection & testing

The plug, cable and appliance is inspected to ensure it is in good working order, and free of damage that could result in access to live parts. A polarity test, earth continuity test, insulation resistance test to 500v and/or an earth leakage test is carried out.

Step 2 counter

Labelling the appliance

A test label will be attached to each appliance with the barcode ID, test and re-test date. Appliances that fail testing will be labeled with a do not use tag and reported. We have different tags to suit different work environments.

Step 3 counter

Documentation

A register of all equipment tested is compiled. Your report will detail the names and number of appliances tested, their location, the number of failed items and recommended re-test dates. This register can also be used as an asset register.

FAQs

Is PAT testing required by law?

It is not a legal requirement to test, however it is the law to provide a safe workplace so if an accident were to occur the authorities could pursue this avenue to effect a prosecution.

What is our process?

One of the first steps in Appliance Check's electrical safety testing is to perform a visual inspection of the appliance - an expert look can usually tell whether an appliance is damaged and what may have caused it.

A technician will then perform and compile the results of a portable appliance testing tool run. These diagnostics will provide a documented base to cover whether something is damaged and if not, it can provide a baseline for future testing requirements in your Health and Safety Plan.

Who can perform an electricity safety test?

All electrical safety tests should be conducted by a trained Electrical Appliance Technician.

How often should you test your appliances?

Government guidelines are as follows:

Building, construction and demolition tools – 3 monthly
Equipment in engineering shops and/or a harsh environment – 6 monthly
Hospitality – motels, hotels, hostels – 2 yearly
Office equipment such as computers – 5 yearly

What types of businesses do you services?

We service a wide-range of businesses across different sectors including hospitality, laboratories and offices.
