The staff, students, Board of Trustees and the community of Urenui School welcome you and your family to the Urenui School community. We hope your time involved with our school will be worthwhile, rewarding and enjoyable.

Urenui School is placed in a friendly and vibrant coastal / rural area.  We currently have five classes and a roll of around 100 children.

A high level of consultation exists between parents and staff and the involvement of the community is encouraged whenever possible. The staff believes that close co-operation of home and school is vital for effective holistic growth, and we look forward to frequent contact with parents. Staff particularly welcome and appreciate assistance with class activities and involvement in sporting and cultural pursuits.

Our staff are dedicated people who enjoy the relationships with the tamariki and wider families both with academic and social activities.  We have a fantastic Home and School group of parents who organise fundraising activities that contribute to the learning and other activities for our students.

Urenui School opened in 1876. It was once a ‘full primary’ school however due to a local intermediate opening in Waitara it became a ‘contributing school,’ catering for Years 1-6 children in a coastal setting. It is a spacious school with four classrooms operating and a library which is also used for Te Reo.

Students leave at the end of Year 6 and in general attend Intermediate / Secondary schools in Waitara or New Plymouth.

Urenui School is situated twenty five minutes north of New Plymouth. Children attending the school come from the village itself or surrounding area.

Urenui School belongs to the North Taranaki Cluster group. This is a group of four rural schools. The children meet regularly for sporting, cultural and learning activities. The teachers meet once a term to share ideas, participate in professional development. Occasionally the school students also participate in inter-school activities in the wider Taranaki area. 

Our principal leads and manages Urenui School, working together with a team of  teachers and teacher-aides. Staff bring with them a collective range of abilities.  The school also employs a Te Reo teacher and a Reading Recovery teacher to enhance the learning opportunities of our tamariki and to ensure we are supporting our Māori students to enjoy success in a culturally appropriate environment.
