Logistics

If you are visiting the region and are staying in Christchurch or the wider Canterbury area we would be happy to collect you as part of our service. 

Travel time to the fishing/training location would be between 0.5 – 1 hour when departing from Christchurch city.

You would expect around 5 hours of on the river fishing/training and a sheltered indoor location could be sort out if unfavorable weather is encountered on the booked day.


The "How it's done in New Zealand" package is designed as a purely educational package option and although it may be possible to attempt to catch some trout as part of the day, it is not a guided fishing day, hence the cheaper pricing structure. Please note that we consistently practice "Catch and Release" (refer "Key Fishing Information") 

Please also note that during peak guiding periods booking of this package option may only be possible up to two weeks in advance.

The "How it's done in NZ" Day is designed for an angler new to NZ to gain knowledge of when, where and how to fish NZ waters. A must for anyone new to fishing NZ and who is planning to do a South Island fly fishing tour, or as an introduction to someone already living in New Zealand who wants to learn more about South Island fly fishing. Let us show you how Kiwi Fly Fishermen have adapted their technique to best succeed at catching wild NZ Brown and Rainbow trout.

​This trip includes door to door pick-up, a trip to a local river or stream, approximately 5 hours of teaching on approaching a targeting trout on the fly in the South Island of New Zealand. The trip will educate the angler on New Zealand invertebrate/insects, fauna, fly selection and presentation, knot tying and rigs. Additionally you can expect to learn about targeting Browns and Rainbow’s in lakes, rivers and streams, river crossing, handy presentation casts, how to optimally select likely trout waters due to stability, food supply and other factors.

​It will also include a few hints on some great fishing locations to visit while traveling the South island, and although the fishing will be located near to Christchurch city, there may still be some interesting wildlife and flora to encounter. Many endemic and introduced duck species as well as some cormorant/sea bird bird species can be encountered in waterways close to the city.
